The Golden Globes are making a new start: After the award ceremony was unglamorous due to protests and boycotts, celebrations were held again this year. Jennifer Coolidge accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries, Anthology Series or TV Movie.

The Golden Globes are back in their old glory! After last year’s protests, the well-known film awards ceremony took place again in a glamorous way. Numerous celebrities attended the event, and the traditional jokes were not dispensed with either. Among other things, “Top Gun” actor Tom Cruise (60) got his fat off.
During the event, the evening’s presenter, comedian Jerrod Carmichael (35), took to the stage with three Golden Globes. “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globes that Tom Cruise gave back,” he said. In 2021, Cruise returned the awards in protest, the organizers were accused of a lack of diversity among the jurors. Carmichael continued: “Look, I’m only the host, but I have a suggestion. I think we could take those three things and trade them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
The background: Tom Cruise is probably the best-known member of Scientology, and Shelly Miscavige (61) is the wife of the sect’s founder, David Miscavige (62). She was last seen in public in 2007, since which time ex-Scientology members have reported that Shelly Miscavige has been banished to a remote location. There have even been missing persons reports that concluded Miscavige was fine. Carmichael’s joke was intended to rekindle the myth of her kidnapping. However, Tom Cruise was not there at all.
The most sensational scene of the Oscars in recent years was also discussed at the Golden Globes. Will Smith (54) attacked comedian Chris Rock (57) last year after he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith (51) suffering from patches of hair loss. Eddie Murphy advised young aspiring comedians during his Cecil B. DemMille Award acceptance speech, “I want you to know that there is a definite plan you can follow to achieve success, wealth, longevity and peace of mind.” Just do these three things: “Pay your taxes, mind your own business, and keep the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your damn mouth!” Smith had shouted the latter at Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards.
Eddie Murphy’s huge family
Eddie Murphy was also laughed at. While comedian Tracy Morgan (54) gave his eulogy to the “Dr. Dolittle star, he couldn’t help but quip about Murphy’s family of ten. “You’re really bad at pulling out,” he quipped, suggesting he was trying to break Bob Marley’s record of having 11 children. He looks at his partner Paige Butcher (43) and she is already pregnant. Eddie Murphy has ten children by five different women.
Jokes that make you think
The presentation of the film prizes by the Association of Foreign Press (HFPA) was heavily criticized last year because the panel of jurors was not diverse enough. The gala was not broadcast, and there was no pre-event on the red carpet. This was also addressed by the moderator of the award: “I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m black, »said the evening’s moderator, comedian Jerrod Carmichael (35) to the guests at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Looking back on last year’s protests, he said: “I will not say that they were a racist organization. But they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died. So do what you want with this information.”
