Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha has been in a coma since mid-December.
A month after the sudden collapse of the Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha (44), the country continues to worry about the possible heir to the throne. The eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 70, passed out in the northeast city of Nakhon Ratchasima in mid-December while training her dogs.
The 44-year-old, affectionately known as “Princess Pa”, was flown to Bangkok’s King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. She is in a coma, but not much is known about her exact condition.
Doctors assume heart problems
The palace spoke in a first message of heart problems. Bajrakitiyabha is connected to equipment to maintain heart, lung and kidney function. The website recently said the princess was still unconscious. Cardiac arrhythmias due to a bacterial infection were given as the reason.
An altar with a portrait of the princess and her orange royal flag has been set up in the hospital for weeks. Again and again people lay flowers in orange tones, pray and bow in front of their picture. Orange is Bajrakitiyabha’s birth color: she was born on a Thursday, which is associated with this color in Thailand.
The king’s closest confidant
Also in front of the hospital, followers are waiting for news next to pictures of the princess that they have put up there. The hospital is closely monitored by police officers. In temples across the country, people also pray in front of their portrait. Bangkok’s New Year celebrations were also far less noisy and colorful than usual because of concerns about Bajrakitiyabha.
The doctor of law came from the first marriage of the current king. From 2012 to 2014 she was her country’s ambassador to Austria. She also worked temporarily at the United Nations in New York. According to observers, she has been part of the king’s inner circle for years and is considered his possible successor. The royal family is a politically and socially extremely important institution in Thailand. (SDA)
