It’s the streaming hit of the holidays: Within just three days, the new Netflix crime comedy “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” with ex-007 actor Daniel Craig (54) was viewed by the US streaming giant in more than 30 million households . Between December 23 and 25, 35 million views were counted (82.1 million streamed hours, i.e. viewing hours, divided by 2.3 hours of running time), as the company announced on Tuesday evening. In countries like the USA, Germany and also Switzerland, the crime comedy is currently leading the charts.
Puzzles in Agatha Christie style
In the star-studded sequel to the surprise hit “Knives Out” (2019) by author and director Rian Johnson (49), Daniel Craig slips back into the role of the odd detective Benoit Blanc. For his latest case, the American is traveling to Greece in the midst of the corona pandemic. Tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) has invited a handful of his longtime friends to his private island for a murder mystery weekend. The group is supposed to find out who is responsible for Miles’ fake death – but it quickly becomes clear: The game becomes reality, and so the events develop into a fast-paced “Who did it?” puzzle in the best Agatha Christie manner. In addition to Daniel Craig and Edward Norton, other superstars such as Kate Hudson (43), Ethan Hawke (52), Hugh Grant (62) and tennis star Serena Williams (41) can be seen.
Daniel Craig in particular seems to enjoy his character of the dandy detective with a broad southern accent and retro wardrobe – no wonder: it’s the exact opposite of his previous Bond role. After the Brit slipped into 007’s skin for the last time in “No Time to Die” in 2021, he explained: “This is the last time, I don’t want to do it anymore.” With the role of the eccentric Benoit Blanc, Craig seems finally to be able to free himself from his unwanted role as a British secret agent. “I read it and knew immediately who this guy is,” Craig recently explained his commitment to the crime comedy of the German Press Agency. “Getting something so polished, so exciting and funny, that’s something that happens very, very rarely.”
Part 3 is scheduled for release in late 2024
Not only the main actor is enthusiastic about his new, quirky star role – fans all over the world already love Daniel Craig as the pink-wearing master detective. No wonder Netflix let the “Knives Out” sequel cost 450 million dollars, including the production of a third part. It is expected to be released by the end of 2024.
