According to its own statements, a non-partisan committee in Bern collected almost 2,000 signatures against a planned playground. The members complain that the costs of CHF 3.7 million are far too high.
Representatives of the SVP, GLP and the center as well as associations close to the SVP handed in the signatures for a referendum on Monday. It takes 1,500 signatures to create one in the city of Bern. 2000 came together.
Now the signatures are checked by the authorities. If the referendum is definitely held, the corresponding referendum is expected to take place in autumn 2023, as the committee announced on Monday.
“Most expensive playground in the world”
With its referendum, the committee objects to the purchase of a property on Looslistrasse in Bern-Bethlehem. A playground and meeting place is to be built on the current parking lot. The country, which belongs to the pharmacy group Galenica, costs a total of 3.7 million francs. In addition, there are the construction costs for the playground.
Galenica, the current owner of the car park, should be able to continue using the car park free of charge and keep the parking fees after the property has been sold and until the playground is built.
The referendum committee speaks of a “tax waste in the millions”. Bern affords what is probably the most expensive playground “in the world”, even though the city coffers are empty. (SDA)
