30 years after EEA no
Blocher sees Swiss neutrality threatened by the EU
Former Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher still sees Switzerland in a defensive fight against the EU, even 30 years after the EEA no, as he said in a speech. According to him, the rapprochement with the EU is currently threatening Swiss neutrality in particular.
Former Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher still sees the EU as a colonial power that is concerned with subjugating Switzerland. On Friday evening in Zurich, he also warned of a loss of neutrality.
With the rejection of EEA accession on December 6, 1992, Switzerland was “saved from the arms of a lost classe politique,” said Blocher on Friday evening in his speech at a “Pro Switzerland” event in Zurich. With the anniversary of the EEA No, Switzerland is celebrating “the rebirth of a Switzerland that was almost lost at the time”.
With the “Colonial Treaty”, the European Community (EC), as the EU was then called, wanted to subdue Switzerland. “The EU should rule Switzerland like the English ruled India, the Belgians ruled Congo, and the Germans ruled Namibia,” said Blocher.
Even today, the rapprochement with the EU sought by broad political circles threatens Swiss independence. The Federal Council, parliament and federal administration would basically never have recognized the no. For this reason, the application for EU membership was only withdrawn in 2014, and an attempt was made – albeit initially unsuccessful – to conclude a framework agreement with the EU.
According to Blocher, Switzerland has developed extremely well on its own without the EU over the past few decades – despite all the forecasts of economic collapse that were circulated in the run-up to the vote.
Just like 30 years ago, Blocher sees Swiss independence threatened by the EU – for example by the framework agreement. According to Blocher, the “value-based, solidary partnership with the EU” upheld by the Federal Council alone gets Switzerland into trouble, as it leads to the adoption of EU sanctions against Russia and thus to the surrender of “special Swiss neutrality”.
This goal is to be achieved with the neutrality initiative recently launched by «Pro Switzerland». The initiative aims to largely ban Switzerland from membership in defense alliances and from accepting or imposing sanctions.
«Pro Schweiz» is a successor organization to the Campaign for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland (AUNS). The AUNS served as a non-partisan platform for the EEA opponents in the referendum campaign.
