The use of genetic engineering is a hotly debated topic in Swiss politics. Switzerland has had a ban on genetic engineering in agriculture for 16 years. But now Parliament wants to relax this ban. The so-called Crispr/Cas gene scissors are to be approved in the future because there are fewer risks in such new genetic engineering methods. The Federal Council should prepare a draft for a corresponding template by mid-2024 at the latest.

The Federal Ethics Committee does not think this is a good idea. New genetic engineering methods such as Crispr/Cas would not make an important contribution to the adaptation of Swiss agriculture to climate change, the committee writes in a report presented on Monday.
