The Schaffhausen Cantonal Council approved the revision of the Water Management Act on Monday with 48 to 4 votes. This defines the general conditions for an additional power plant at the Rhine Falls and maximum values for water withdrawal. Experts assume that the Rhine Falls could produce an additional 90 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. At 23 meters high and 150 meters wide, the Rhine Falls is one of the largest and most water-rich waterfalls in Europe.

Commission President Erwin Sutter (EDU) emphasized that the change in the law only serves to lift the planning ban. There is no specific project.

In the Schaffhausen landmark and tourist magnet, a small power plant already produces 40 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. However, this only covers 2.5 percent of Schaffhausen’s electricity consumption. Proponents hope that a new power plant could triple this amount.
