Good news for people at risk! The federal government has signed a purchase agreement for the corona drug Paxlovid with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. 12,000 packs are to be delivered this month.
The drug is used in people who have been infected with the coronavirus and who are at increased risk of serious illness. It is taken in tablet form and lowers the risk of a severe course.
First treatments in May
The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) announced that the first treatments should begin this month. These would first take place in authorized cantonal centres. In a second phase, the prescription drug will then also be available from general practitioners and pharmacies. The federal government bears the costs for outpatient use.
Paxlovid is not yet approved in Switzerland, the process is ongoing. However, the Covid regulation stipulates that drugs may already be used during the approval process. (lha)
