Federal government corrects asylum prognosis upwards again

The number of asylum applications in Switzerland has risen sharply. According to the State Secretariat for Migration, the strong influx of asylum seekers continues. It increases its asylum forecast to at least 22,000 applications by the end of the year.

The federal government, the cantons and the municipalities are increasing the number of beds for refugees. Here is a picture of the Viererfeld accommodation in Bern.

The Swiss asylum authority is increasing the forecast for 2022. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is now assuming that at least 22,000 asylum applications should be made in Switzerland by the end of the year. That would be around 7,000 more applications than in the previous year. However, the number is still below the 25,000 requests that the outgoing Secretary of State for Migration Mario Gattiker (66) warned about at the beginning of the year.

Asylum applications have risen sharply in recent weeks. In September, 2,681 applications were received. According to the SEM, this is the highest value within a month since the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016. Experience has shown that numerous people would still try to get to Western Europe before the onset of winter.
