Health Commission of the Council of States demands
From April you should pay for corona tests yourself
Anyone who takes a corona test should have to pay for it themselves from April 2023. This is the opinion of the competent Council of States commission. Until then, the federal government should continue to bear the test costs.
In the future, anyone who takes a corona test should have to pay for it themselves.
With 6 to 5 votes, the Commission for Social Security and Health of the Council of States has requested that responsibility for the test regime and the assumption of the test costs be left with the federal government until spring 2023, as the parliamentary services announced on Friday. From then on, the test costs should no longer be covered by the public sector.
In autumn, the National Council decided in the corresponding proposal to extend and change selected provisions of the Covid-19 Act that the current regime should be maintained until the end of June 2024. This means that the federal government should pay for the tests until then.
The federal government wants the cantons to pay
The Federal Council would like the cantons to bear the test costs from next year and no longer the federal government, as has been the case since the outbreak of the pandemic. Health Minister Alain Berset (50) pointed out in the debate in the National Council that this corresponds to the proper division of tasks. The federal government bore the lion’s share of the costs caused by the pandemic. The tests alone cost 2.3 billion francs in the first year.
The cantons already resisted taking over the test costs during the consultation. The conference of cantonal health directors expects the cantons to incur additional costs of several hundred million francs.
The proposal now goes to the Council of States. (SDA)
