The Bernese SP National Councilor Flavia Wasserfallen (43) would like to become a member of the Council of States. In recent years, she has honed the political craft of forging alliances in the National Council, she says. in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers “Berner Zeitung” and “Bund”. Something she might find useful in the Small Vault.
In mid-April, the Bernese SP Councilor of States Hans Stöckli (70) announced that he would resign at the end of the legislature. The SP wants to compete with the Greens with a two-way ticket to the elections. The party would also like to nominate a woman.
Masshardt, Allemann and Aebischer didn’t want to
In addition to Flavia Wasserfallen, National Councilor Nadine Masshardt (37) was briefly discussed for a successor, but she withdrew from the race. There were also cancellations from the Bernese SP government councilor Evi Allemann (43) and from SP National Councilor Matthias Aebischer (54).
Wasserfallen revealed their ambitions on Friday. There is no competition in sight. The nomination for the Council of States elections is planned for the party conference in November.
Wasserfallen wants to stir up the Council of States
It appeals to her, as a member of the Council of States, to politicize on a broader topic and to sit on several commissions. “After all, I could also contribute to the Council of States being a little more mixed up,” says the native of Bern.
In terms of the proportion of women and the average age, there is “still a lot of room for improvement or downwards” in the small chamber. In addition, the “hesitant attitude” of the Council of States on issues such as marriage for all or sexual criminal law shows that more progressive forces are also needed in the small chamber, according to Wasserfallen.
First Councilor of States, then Federal Councilor?
When asked about any ambitions to one day succeed Simonetta Sommaruga (62) in the Federal Council, Wasserfallen is reluctant: “My next goal is the candidacy for the Council of States, and my full focus is on it if the party nominates me.” (SDA/lm)
