The quarter-finals will be a nightmare for the U20 national team at the World Cup in Canada. Marco Bayer’s team lost 9-1 against the Czech Republic.

The quarter-finals of the World Cup against the strong Czech Republic could not have started better: after 22 seconds, Louis Robin, who plays for the Val-d’Or Foreurs in Canada, puts the U20 national team ahead. There is hope, especially since Marco Bayer’s team had beaten the Czechs in preparation and had already won three tournaments against Finland, Latvia and Slovakia.
But the dream start is followed by a real nightmare: 9 minutes later the Czechs lead 3:1. The Swiss defence, which had played a good tournament before, is not looking good. Maximilian Streule from the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (Ka) did not have goal scorer Jiri Kulich under control when equalizing. In the shorthander to 1:2, the only regular NL player in the team, Dario Sidler, lets the man with the sounding name Marcel Marcel outplay him. Even at 1: 3, the small Lausanne back (1.71 m / 75 kg) is mercilessly overwhelmed against the Brocken (1.94 / 98).
Bitter: Even goalie Kevin Pasche, who, like Akira Schmid, plays for the Omaha Lancers in the USA, hardly manages to save. When he conceded the 1:4 right after the first break, he was replaced by Alessio Beglieri (Missisauga Steelheads). That doesn’t help either. The defensive solidity and team spirit that characterized the team before was blown away in the first knockout game. The Swiss let themselves go in phases. At the end there is a brutal 1:9. A resounding slap. Ouch.
