In the limelight: Jelena Dokic conducts interviews – here with Magda Linette.
Badly offended online – celebrated by the stars. The 39-year-old TV expert Jelena Dokic experiences a stirring Australian Open. “The body shaming and fat shaming over the last 24 hours was sick,” writes the former world number four during the current Grand Slam tournament.
As an interviewer, Dokic puts a smile on the faces of stars like Djokovic with her questions. But on social media, she experiences the darkest side of the limelight. For example, it is referred to as a “whale” that makes watching TV unsightly. Public outcry at Dokic, who shares the unsavory comments.
The bad low point: “Now that the Australian Open begins, she will try to kill herself, like every year,” comments an online hater. This not only drives the former tennis prodigy through marrow and leg. The bad sentence has a bad background.

“My father abused me”
It’s been less than a year since Dokic wanted to take his own life again. Her life had become hell because of her father, as she points out again in the “Sydney Morning Herald”: “My father had abused me mentally, emotionally and physically since I was six years old. For nearly two decades, I was bullied by the person who was supposed to be taking care of me.”
Her father even spent a year in prison for a bomb threat. Meanwhile, Dokic caused a stir with tennis on the big stage. But after the career comes the next stressful time: Because of a thyroid disease, Dokic suddenly gains weight.
Hingis was also kicked out as a qualifier
Melbourne favorite Novak Djokovic’s recent words are balm to the soul. After the win against Dimitrov on Saturday, he reminisced in front of the assembled ranks: “I looked up at you. You played for Australia, but you’re from my home country, we speak the same language and you were a big star at the time.” Dokic asked him about a meeting in 2006.
Dokic knocked out Martina Hingis from the first round of Wimbledon in 1999 as a 16-year-old qualifier. Now she’s back in the tennis spotlight – and doesn’t let anyone get her down: “I will always raise my voice in the fight against abuse, child abuse and domestic violence.” (str)
