The Swiss have nine medals to defend in Courchevel/Méribel.
The Venue
The 2023 Alpine World Ski Championships will take place in Courchevel and Méribel in the French ski region of Trois Vallées.
The two towns share the races. The women fight for the medals in Méribel, the men do so in Courchevel.
Overall, France is hosting a World Ski Championships for the fifth time. It took place twice in Chamonix (1937 and 1962) and once each in Grenoble (1968) and Val-d’Isère (2009).
The choices
In Courchevel/Méribel, 13 sets of medals will be distributed. There are the following disciplines for both women and men: parallel races, downhill, super-G, combination (consisting of super-G and slalom), slalom and giant slalom. There is also a team competition.
A nation may enter a maximum of four athletes in each race. The defending champion gets an extra starting place. SRF broadcasts all races live.

The defending champions
In 2021 in Cortina d’Ampezzo (It) Switzerland was the most successful nation – at least in terms of the number of medals. The Swiss Ski athletes have won precious metal nine times. Austria won the medal table – with eight medals, five of which were gold.
discipline | Women | men |
Super G | Lara Gut-Behrami (Sz) | Vincent Kriechmayr (Austria) |
Departure | Corinne Suter (Sz) | Vincent Kriechmayr (Austria) |
giant slalom | Lara Gut-Behrami (Sz) | Mathieu Faivre (Fri) |
slalom | Catherine Liensberger (Austria) | Sebastian Foss-Solevaag (No) |
combination | Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) | Marco Schwarz (Austria) |
parallel race | Marta Bassino (It) and Katharina Liensberger (Austria) | Mathieu Faivre (Fri) |
team event | Norway |
The favourites
Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) and Marco Odermatt are making the mark so far this season. Both lead in the overall World Cup and diligently collect victories and podium places. This makes you one of the hottest contenders for precious metal – and in several disciplines at the same time.
In addition, the Italians in particular make up a strong team for the women with Sofia Goggia, Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino. A Petra Vlhova (Slk) can always be expected in the technical disciplines. In addition, Ilka Stuhec (Slo, Downhill), Ragnhild Mowinckel (No, Super-G) and Valérie Grenier (Ka, giant slalom) have also celebrated victories this season, proving that they can be at the forefront.
From a Swiss point of view, the big trumps are Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener (both multiple winners of the season) as well as Corinne Suter and Joana Hählen, who have also climbed onto the podium. Other riders can certainly be expected to exploit at the World Championships, especially Michelle Gisin, who has not been doing so well this season so far.
What the Italians are to women, the Norwegians are to men. Above all, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who has already fought a thrilling duel with Marco Odermatt several times this season. His compatriots Lucas Braathen, Henrik Kristoffersen and Atle Lie McGrath have also been impressive so far. In addition, the Austrians are also to be expected, in the speed area, for example, with the double title defender Vincent Kriechmayr, among the technicians, Marco Schwarz and Manuel Feller as well as the Frenchman Clément Noël are among the medal contenders.
But the other Swiss besides Odermatt shouldn’t be neglected either. Daniel Yule and Loïc Meillard, among others, have already been on top of the podium, while Ramon Zenhäusler, Gino Caviezel, Stefan Rogentin and Niels Hintermann also have podium places this season.
The Swiss squad for the World Cup
It is not yet known who will go on a medal hunt for Switzerland in Courchevel/Méribel. The Swiss-Ski squad will follow in the next few days.
The history of the World Ski Championships
The Alpine Ski World Championships were first held in 1931 in Mürren in the Bernese Oberland. Like the Nordic World Championships, the World Championships take place every two years. Most recently there was the Ski Festival 2021 in Cortina d’Ampezzo. There were a total of nine world championships in Switzerland.
The eternal medal table
The most successful ski nation when it comes to World Cup medals is Austria. Switzerland follows at a clear distance in second place.
