Will FC Wil dribble out all forecasts in the new year? The eastern Swiss start the second half of the season as leaders near Vaduz on Friday. Before the season, Wil was seen more as a candidate for relegation than for promotion. But one saw it completely differently even before the league started: Captain Philipp Muntwiler (35) saw no reason why you shouldn’t have a say at the front – especially since there are up to three promoted teams this season.
Muntwiler says on the fringes of the test match at FCZ: “In the Challenge League, the differences between the teams are not huge. With a good team spirit you can get a lot out of it. We really are one. I have never experienced such team spirit in any team.”
A new name on the trainer horizon
According to Muntwiler, trainer Brunello Iacopetta (38) plays the biggest role in the flight. “He handles the team with the many young people and the two or three older people with a lot of social skills. In addition, we are always well positioned tactically, »describes Muntwiler, together with storm oldie Silvio (37), the leader of the young wild ones.
Wil can dream of promotion. And thanks to the softened stadium requirements, could even play in their own Lidl Arena Super League. Muntwiler: «The ascent would be a sensation. But we’re not stressed. We remain humble and just keep working calmly.”
Muntwiler will soon be 36 years old. After six years in the Challenge League, would he actually attack again in the Super League? The former FCL, St. Gallen and Vaduz player is motivated: “I’m fit and I still have a lot of fun. But my contract expires in the summer, the club should still want me.”
