Andri Ragettli secures victory in the home World Cup.
Even before the final run, Ragettli announces that he will have a much more difficult run on Sunday than in the semifinals. The local hero follows up his big words with deeds, delivers and takes the lead. Because the weather conditions are becoming increasingly difficult in the second run, Ragettli can ultimately be happy about the home win and his 11th World Cup success. Alexander Hall, who grew up in Switzerland, comes in second, followed by World Cup leader Birk Ruud.
The young Swiss Valentin Morel (22) surprises in the snow flurry in Laax. He delivered solid rides twice and was able to place seventh – the best World Cup placement in the young career of the French-speaking Swiss. Two-time world champion Fabian Bösch is just one place behind.
Weather also causes problems on Sunday
The freestyle park at Crap Sogn Gion showed its best side early in the morning. As in the previous days, the thermometer showed temperatures in the double-digit minus range, but meanwhile a steel-blue sky and sunshine stretched over the mountain. Even while the snowboarders were fighting for the slopestyle victory, more and more fog and snow were drifting up from the valley.
At the beginning of the ski slopestyle final, the snowfall increased and the conditions became more difficult. While the two men’s runs are still being whipped through despite poor visibility, the women’s final around the Swiss Olympic stars Mathilde Gremaud and Sarah Hoefflin has to be cancelled. However, the latter plays this into the cards: Because the results of the qualification are now counted, Hoefflin can be happy about second place. Gremaud finishes fourth.
Snowboard Huber missed podium in slopestyle
Zurich snowboarder Nicolas Huber took eighth place in the slopestyle final, which was postponed from Saturday to Sunday. After the first run, the 28-year-old was still in seventh place. In the second run he risked significantly more than in the already extremely solid first run, but fell and had to line up behind the top stars. The Norwegian Marcus Kleveland won ahead of the American Dusty Henricksen and the Swede Sven Thorgren.
New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synontt wins the women’s event. The women’s final took place without Swiss participation. All four Swiss women got stuck in qualifying on Friday.
Snowboard halfpipe final canceled
The actual highlight of the Laax Open, the snowboarders’ halfpipe final, did not take place. Poor visibility due to fog and strong gusts of wind meant that the start scheduled for Saturday afternoon was postponed. Because there was no improvement after almost two hours, it was decided to call off the final and let the results from the semifinals count. The one who suffers is Olympic star Jan Scherrer, who has to settle for 7th place.
