Thousands cancel TV subscriptions
Are Juve fans putting Italian football at risk?
In the course of the points deduction, Juventus fans have called for a curious boycott campaign. But what they probably don’t realize is that they are endangering the whole of football in “Bella Italia”.

Juventus fans call for a boycott of pay-tv channels.
Juventus are in deep trouble, both in terms of sport and business. On the one hand, after deducting the 15 points in the table, they are only in 10th place, and the record champions are also threatened with criminal proceedings. And now their own fans could also cause financial problems.
As various media reports, around 13,000 subscriptions to the payment channels DAZN and Sky are said to have been canceled in the province of Apulia in the south of the country alone. In messages from various fan clubs, other “Juventini” are called upon to end their contracts with the pay-TV stations as well.

One should distance oneself from everything that concerns Italian football, “except from our beloved Juventus”. “We only finance and support our team, we go to the Allianz Stadium and not to the guest sectors of other Italian clubs,” it said. Newspaper subscriptions and other media offers should also be rejected. However, they did not consider that their call for a TV boycott in particular could have devastating consequences for all of Italian football – including Juve.
Clubs live mainly from TV income
If, for example, 500,000 Juve fans actually decide to quit, the broadcasters would lose around 150 million at a subscription price of around 300 francs a year. And indirectly, of course, the clubs. The Football Association’s report for the 2020/21 season, for example, showed that television rights accounted for an average of 47 per cent of Serie A clubs’ total revenues.
The importance of income from TV rights can be demonstrated with the business figures of the 36-time Scudetto winner. Juve earned 235.3 million in 2020/21, which corresponds to a share of almost 49 percent (total 480.7 million). Although this share shrank to 38 percent last season, this was only because spectators returned to the stadium after the pandemic and ticket revenue rose again as a result.
However, that doesn’t hide the fact that Italian football clubs are heavily dependent on TV money – especially Juventus. If the Bianconeri miss the European Cup places due to the point deduction, additional and important income will go to waste. (che)
