Jeff Tomlinson (centre) will leave as coach, while Kimmo Rintanen (left) and Saku Martikainen (right) will remain as assistants.
Jeff Tomlinson will step down as head coach at the end of the season due to health issues. Who follows the Canadian at EHC Kloten is still open. However, the question of which assistant coaches belong to the new man’s staff has been clarified. And that he cannot bring them himself.
Because the previous assistant coaches Kimmo Rintanen and Saku Martikainen were each extended by one year. “I was able to observe Kimmo and Saku for two and a half months, they have played a large part in our successes so far,” says sports director Larry Mitchell, explaining the continuation of the cooperation.
Kimmo Rintanen (49), who mainly takes care of the offensive, will be starting his 16th season with EHC Kloten. From 2001 to 2011 he inspired as a player, from 2012 to 2015 he completed his first years as an assistant. After six seasons in Turku, where he owns a home, he returned in 2021 and rose with his heart club last spring.
Saku Martikainen (43) is the defensive man – although he was also a striker in his playing career. He came to Kloten this season with the experience of more than 20 years of coaching. He worked in Finland as an assistant coach for the U16 and U18 national teams, as well as an assistant in several clubs in the top league. His last stop before moving to Switzerland was Ässät in Pori (Fin). (just)
