The Germans make short work of the Italians, leading 4-0 in the first half and pulling away to 8-1 before lack of concentration allows the Italians three more goals in the final half. In the end it’s 9:4.
With the fourth win in the fifth game, the German selection is almost impossible to take the quarter-final ticket. After 2019 and 2021 it would be the third qualification. At the end of the preliminary round there will be a duel against Switzerland on Tuesday.
Kazakhstan still winless
Kazakhstan also lost out to Slovakia, despite a lead after the first third, resulting in their fifth defeat for the Central Asians. The Slovaks shifted up a gear in the middle third, scored three goals and thus decided this game. In the end, Slovakia wins 4:3.
Finland effortlessly against Great Britain
In the stronger group B in Tampere, Finland took the lead again with a 6-0 win over Great Britain. The World Cup hosts added Esa Lindell and Miro Heiskanen with two other NHL stars joining the team from the Dallas Stars.
Things are looking tricky for the Brits, who haven’t scored for the third time in a row. In the last two games against Latvia and Austria, points and goals are needed. Otherwise there is a risk of relegation.
Austria’s quarter-final dream burst
The team with the Swiss coaching team Roger Bader and Arno Del Curto equalized twice against their direct competitor Latvia in Group B and thus forced the extra time. But even this does not bring a winner, so the penalty shootout must decide. The Latvians prevailed there and secured the additional point.
Austria slips down to 7th place. There are now three points missing on the Czech Republic and the quarter-final places. However, the Czechs have played one game less. The quarter-finals are a long way off, the Ösis have to win against Great Britain in order not to be relegated. (SDA / jsl)
