Henrik Röa fell badly in the Kitzbühel descent on Friday.
The Hahnenkamm descent from Kitzbühel has long been the most dangerous slope in the Ski World Cup and is known for its nasty falls. And this year the Streif shows its ugly side again.
There were eight failures in the two descents, with the Norwegian Henrik Röa being hit the hardest. With start number 48 he started the first descent on Friday, the shock followed shortly before the finish.
Broken fibula
The 27-year-old had already made it past the finish line when his skis clipped just a few meters before the finish line and he fell badly as a result. He is then taken to the hospital by rescue helicopter.
A short time later, the bad diagnosis follows: According to the “Krone”, Röa has suffered an open fracture on the fibula.
Kilde and Odermatt’s moment of shock
Compatriot Aleksander Aamodt Kilde then posted on Instagram: «I send my best wishes to my teammate Henrik Röa, who had a bad fall and broke his leg. The Streif is a hell of a ride.”
Kilde himself also caused a shock on Friday when he miraculously saved himself from taking off in the final traverse. Just like our ski ace Marco Odermatt, who, as is well known, only just avoided a terrible fall in the “U-Hakerl”.
Double unlucky shaker
At the same place, the Austrian Julian Schütter could no longer prevent this a day later. Due to too much reserve in the curve, he slipped and slammed into the nets. “It gave me a stab in my knee, it pinches a bit,” he later told “ORF”.
Particularly bitter: On the first descent on Friday he was waved off the yellow flag after Röa’s fall when he was running with a good time. In the end, he was no longer able to match his performance on the repeat run.
“It’s not up to date”
Former Streif winners were not spared this year either: Thomas Dressen, who sensationally triumphed at the Hahnenkamm five years ago, fell on Saturday at the “Alte Schneise” after being surprised by a blow.
In the finish area, the German then criticized the organizers’ decision to start the race from the very top: “It was decided in advance that the start is where it is. I don’t understand the fact that we athletes don’t even have a say and it’s not up to date.”
Airbag saves Sarrazin
Meanwhile, the notorious local mountain edge found its victim in France: Cyprien Sarrazin cut his skis in the crux on Saturday and fell badly into the safety nets. Luckily, the Tenth’s airbag deployed on Friday’s descent, saving him from more serious injuries.
The Hahnenkamm races, a spectacle and a ski festival every year, but also a hell of a ride that can end badly. (bjl)
