Belinda Bencic is without a fight in the final of the Adelaide WTA tournament.
Belinda Bencic is in the final of the Adelaide WTA 500 tournament. In the semifinals, the 25-year-old Swiss benefits from the resignation of her opponent Veronika Kudermetowa. The Russian complains of hip pain. Opponent in the final on Saturday is the Russian Daria Kasatkina, who also entered the final without a fight because Paula Badosa gave up.
Bencic (WTA 13) and Kasatkina (WTA 8) faced each other in Adelaide two years ago. At that time, the eastern Swiss prevailed in two sets in the first round. The last duel so far, however, clearly went to the Russian. At last year’s French Open, Bencic lost 2-6, 2-6. Overall, the Swiss, who was in the final in Adelaide last year (loss against Iga Swiatek), has won two of the five duels with Kasatkina so far.
Bencic is playing for her first title since Charleston 2022 and the sixth of her career. The last time Bencic was in a final was in Berlin in June 2022. At that time, however, she gave up due to injury. (bjl)
