Andrea Brazzola plays with EHC Arosa at the top of the MyHockey-League.

Arosa, Chur and Martigny have applied for promotion to the Swiss League. According to the regulations, two teams can be promoted from the MyHockey-League – if they receive a license and meet the sporting requirements. These were made easier again this week. The entry into the playoff final is enough in any case, depending on the semi-final qualification or even the playoff participation. But do they accept this free ticket and really want to get to the top – after the Swiss League has become a worry league and Langenthal sometimes voluntarily says goodbye at the end of the season for financial reasons?
The teams wanting to be promoted could at least officially withdraw their application by February 10th. However, this deadline should now be extended again until the end of February, after the question marks in the Swiss League will not be resolved by the end of the month as planned. For example, how the Ticino Rockets will continue. And whether EHC Winterthur will really remain in the Swiss League, as recently announced. The two teams now have to make a definitive decision by February 15th.
“We’re running out of time”
“There are still too many unanswered questions, I can’t estimate at this point in time what we will do,” explains Arosa Managing Director Adrian Fetscherin about the initial situation. Because it is still not clear what the Swiss League will look like in the future. Fetscherin is addressing the financial requirements, but also the number of teams and games in the Swiss League. Without answers, planning is difficult, “and with every additional day it becomes even more difficult. When we rise, we also want to be able to be sustainable».

Sustainability is also an important topic in Chur. “We don’t want to climb today in order to descend again tomorrow,” clarifies President Christian Aliesch. If you cannot be convinced of the Swiss League project and it is not sustainable and feasible for us, “then we will not take this risk”. There are still too many questions for Aliesch at the moment: “We are poking around in a thick fog. It makes our homework more difficult and we’re running out of time.”
The EHC Thun as a spoilsport?
Incidentally, promotion is not an issue for the time being for EHC Thun, which currently forms the top quartet in the MyHockey-League together with Chur, Arosa and Martigny. At best, this could change when the new Grabengut ice rink is built at the end of 2024. For the time being, however, the Bernese Oberlanders want to limit themselves to establishing themselves at the top of the MyHockey-League – and also becoming a spoilsport for Chur, Arosa and Martigny.
If Chur and Arosa decide not to withdraw their application for promotion, then the most attractive option would be for them to complete their doctorate together. Because in this way an important source of income would be secured with the lucrative Bündner derbies. During the last duel between Chur and Arosa, 3,000 fans (!) flocked to the Thomas Domenig Stadium last weekend.
