Manchester City and Manuel Akanji turn the game against Tottenham.
After the embarrassing Cup defeat against Southampton and the painful defeat in the derby against United, Manchester City is challenged at home against Tottenham Hotspurs. And the top game delivers what it promises.
It is the guests who set the tone at the beginning of the game. The “Skyblues” defense with Manuel Akanji has problems with Spurs’ fast switching game. Just before the break, it’s Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal who, with generous help from City goalie Ederson, put their team ahead.
Double Mahrez makes the difference
City coach Pep Guardiola seems to have found the right words at the break. His players look exchanged. The “Skyblues” play the defensive of the Londoners downright dizzy. Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland equalized within eight minutes.
After a little more than an hour it is Riyad Mahrez who completes the turning point with a remarkable individual performance. A little later it is again the Algerian who ensures the final result.
This prevented a possible preliminary decision in the championship race – City has reduced the gap to Arsenal to five points in the meantime. Meanwhile, the Gunners have the chance to extend their lead over City to eight points again on Sunday (5:30 p.m.) against Manchester United. (mab)
