Alessandro Del Piero counts his great love Juventus Turin.
Alessandro Del Piero (48) is the epitome of a club icon: he worked for Juventus Turin for 17 years and played 705 games for the “Bianconeri” (290 goals, 176 assists). The events of the last few weeks surrounding the Italian record champions are therefore difficult for him to watch. After the bankruptcy against the newly promoted and Berlusconi club Monza (0: 2), he lets out his frustration.
Memories of the “Calciopoli” case are awakened
Del Piero explains to “Tuttosport” that the events have affected the players. “It’s a very difficult moment. Against Monza we saw mistakes that weren’t appropriate to the quality of the players on the pitch. I believe what is happening at the corporate level is hurting the players on the pitch.” Juventus were deducted 15 points for fraudulent transfers and the club is currently 13th in the table.
“The psychological state of the team is obviously fragile and everything that is said has an impact on it,” added the former striker. Del Piero knows this situation from his own career. In 2006 he was part of the “Old Lady” squad when the club was forced to relegate to Serie B as a result of the “Calciopoli” manipulation scandal. The championship titles 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 were stripped from Juve. And the team had to start the season in the lower house with 17 minus points. Nevertheless, key players such as goalie Buffon and forward Del Piero remained loyal to the club. And indeed, Juve managed to get promoted immediately.
Juventus appeals verdict
Now the club are at rock bottom again and 2006 World Cup winner Del Piero also counts on Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri. “Allegri? The catastrophic start to the season is also his responsibility, I’m thinking of the defeats in the Champions League. The solidity of the last few years is no longer there this season.” Juventus fail in the group stage of the premier class and have to make their way to the knockout phase of the Europa League.
Uncomfortable times are ahead for the club from Piedmont. Against the deduction of points, the Turin team are appealing to the sports tribunal of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). If the verdict is upheld, there is a risk of missing out on European competition. As a result, the club, which was already badly hit financially, would lose millions of euros that had already been planned. Then important players would have to be sold. (mab)
