Last winter Beat Feuz clinched his third Hahnenkamm victory in Kitzbühel.

Can Beat Feuz really hit it again in the last two races of his career? Experts express their doubts. Chur downhill legend Daniel Mahrer observes the farewell tour with a skeptical eye. The Hahnenkamm winner from 1989 says to Blick: “Last week I missed the very last consequence of Beats ride on the Lauberhorn descent. I hope that he can go a step further on the ‹Streif›. I would particularly wish this great racing driver a successful farewell.”
“It would have completely thrown me off balance”Daniel Mahrer
The 61-year-old makes no secret of the fact that he would never have announced his retirement as early as Feuz did. “I announced the end of my career after my last race start. If I had done that earlier, I would have been out of breath, I would not have been able to focus properly.”
Since Feuz announced his departure shortly before Christmas, there has hardly been a day that journalists haven’t asked him about it. “That would have thrown me completely off balance,” says Mahrer.
Eberharter also has doubts
Feuz’ great youth idol Stephan Eberharter thinks similarly to Mahrer in this regard. “If you can’t focus 100 percent on a descent like the ‘Streif’ in Kitzbühel, it becomes really dangerous. And with the resignation in the back of my mind, I wouldn’t have been able to fully concentrate. But the beat is the best judge of itself, so it’s important to respect that decision.”
But there is a famous Swiss example that proves that you can be really fast even after you have declared your resignation. In January 2012, Didier Cuche announced his departure from the ski circus just a few days before the Hahnenkamm descent. After that, the Neuchâtel triumphed for the fifth time on the “Streif”.
