Japan beats Spain and…
The most controversial VAR decision of the World Cup in Qatar is causing discussions.
Before Japan’s 2-1 win against Spain, the ball seemed out of bounds. The VAR watches the video for minutes before referee Victor Gomes gives the goal. It is equivalent to the out of Germany.
“On the video scoreboard I had the feeling that the ball was out of bounds,” said Spain central defender Pau Torres after the game. “But the VAR is not there without a reason.”
“It doesn’t feel right”
When making his decision, the VAR has access to images from 14 cameras. Unlike the goal line, automatic technical aids such as the chip in the ball do not exist for the outer goal line. Only: An official picture, which proves that the ball was not out of bounds, has not yet been published by Fifa.
That’s exactly what bothers England legend Gary Neville (47). Ever since Ecuador scored an offside goal against Qatar in the opening game, “I’ve struggled with it and find it uncomfortable that we’re not being shown the right angles. It doesn’t feel right, »says today’s TV expert.
Germany malice: “That’s pure envy!”(01:31)
The German ex-soccer player Michael Ballack (46) sees it similarly. “The decision is controversial and wrong. You corrected a possible exit decision that cannot be clearly proven, »he says on «Magenta TV».
Memories of Wembley
The goal caused discussions not only among the experts, but also among the fans. While Germans get angry about it, the English celebrate the whole thing. They see the decision as “justice for Lampard”. In the 2010 World Cup round of 16, his shot landed well behind the goal line via the crossbar – the equalizer against Germany (1:4) was not given.
Meanwhile, people in Germany are remembering another World Cup. The one from 1966, when you lost the final against England because of the legendary Wembley goal (2:4 aet). Again, the Germans feel cheated with a controversial decision and an irregular goal. “Like Wembley”, headlines the “Bild”.
And what do the Japanese themselves think? They see it diplomatically. “For me it was half over, but I couldn’t really see it,” says goalscorer Ao Tanaka. “If he had given it out, I would have accepted it and would not have been disappointed.” Coach Hajime Moriyasu adds: “The referee decided the ball was in and we respected that. But we were willing to accept it either way.”
DFB coach Flick irritated: “What Schweinsteiger says is complete nonsense”(01:48)
