Dramatic victory for U20 national team
The Swiss psalm also sounds after the second World Cup game of the U20 national team. After the nerve-wracking victory against Latvia (3:2 nP), Marco Bayer’s team is on course for the quarter-finals.

Appenzeller ex-SCB junior Rodwin Dionicio (pictured in front of Tigers striker Darels Dukurs) scored the 2-2 equalizer for Switzerland two minutes before the end.

In the groundbreaking duel against Latvia, the Swiss take the momentum from the opening game with them. After the surprising win against Finland (3:2 aet) they immediately took the initiative against the defensively-oriented Balts and took the lead through Louis Robin.
After that, however, Marco Bayer’s team became a little passive, briefly losing control of the game and having to accept the equalizer from Dans Lomelis, who had been drafted by the Boston Bruins.
After that, the Swiss are again the team that decides the game, but they get too many penalties. Latvia takes the lead on the power play through Darels Dukurs from the SCL Tigers.
In the final third, the Nati (total 29:18 shots on goal) runs up. Defender Lian Bichsel (28 minutes ice time in total), who plays for Leksand in Sweden and was drafted in the first round by the Dallas Stars in the summer, is being pushed by Bayer. The parade line with Romand Robin, Ticino Lorenzo Canonica and Zug Attilo Biasca, all of whom play in North America, poses the biggest problems for the Latvians.
Dionico saves Switzerland in overtime
But the equalizer does not want to fall because the Swiss are not precise enough in the end and the strong goalie Patriks Berzins keeps calm. Two minutes before the end, Bayer put everything on one card and replaced goalie Kevin Pasche with a sixth field player. With success: The Appenzeller defender Rodwin Dionicio from the Niagara IceDogs shoots the 2:2 on preliminary work by Biasca and Bichsel.
The game will only be decided in the penalty shootout. All five shooters fail on both sides. Then the Lomelis submits. But the Swiss Captain Biasca keeps his nerve in his second attempt and scores as well. And after the next Latvian fails, Liekit Reichle from the GCK Lions, who shot over the open goal in the first attempt, secured the second win for the Nati in Moncton (Ka).
This means that the Bayer team has four points and the best chance of reaching the quarter-finals before the rest day and the final group games against the USA and Slovakia.
