England national team coach Gareth Southgate considered resigning in December after losing the World Cup in the quarter-finals against France (1-2). However, his family persuaded him to fulfill his contract, which runs until 2024, as the 52-year-old has now revealed. “When they left Doha they said: You have to try again to get this trophy,” Southgate told ITV News.
After fourth place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and losing the 2021 European Championship final (in a penalty shoot-out against Italy), the World Cup in Qatar was the third major tournament for Southgate as national coach. The “Three Lions” won the last and only title at the 1966 World Cup in their own country. (AFP)
