Before the “biggest game of the season” against Tampere
EVZ damper at the right time
With his disciplined style of play, promoted Kloten has exposed the impatience of the champions. That can get Zug on track for today’s CHL semi-final smash against Tampere.

EVZ trainer Dan Tangnes has a good laugh in the Champions Hockey League: his team has shown the best performances of the season there so far.

A failed dress rehearsal can lead to a successful gala. If that applies to the EVZ, then Sunday’s setback in Kloten came at just the right time. After a spectacular start to the new year with two victories (6:0, 8:1), the champions lost to the newly promoted side for the first time. And this just two days before the first Champions League semi-final against the Finnish champions in Tampere.
The “good habits” that EVZ trainer Dan Tangnes repeatedly emphasized as a key strength in the two championship years have not yet developed to the same extent this season. “Our bad level is still too bad,” explains the Norwegian. He wants consistency and sustainability, even if not everything in a game works perfectly. “We have to learn to deal with a 1-0 instead of always wanting four or five more goals.” Zug led 1:0 against Kloten – and lost 2:4. The disciplined climber exposed the impatience of the master.
“Biggest game of the season”
Tangnes expects at least as much discipline from Tappara Tampere in the first semi-final match. “We have to be able to accept such a game.” The 43-year-old therefore said the following to his team after the bankruptcy in Kloten: “The game on Tuesday is the biggest game of the season for us. Not the first game after this defeat, we have to tick that off.” And learn from it.
Tangnes is encouraged by his side’s best performances of the season so far in CHL competition. “It makes me happy that the players are so inspired for these international duels.” His EVZ should be a tough opponent in this challenge. The second leg of the semi-final then takes place on Tuesday, January 17, in Zug’s Bossard Arena (8:15 p.m.).
