A quick chat with colleague and mentor Leonardo Genoni – that’s it. This is how Luca Hollenstein prepares for the penalty shoot-out in Fribourg. And keeps strong: Christoph Bertschy, Marcus Sörensen (Sd) and David Desharnais (Ka) all fail because of the young EVZ goalie, only Victor Rask (Sd) scores. But that’s not enough, because with Sven Senteler, Lino Martschini and Jan Kovar all Zug shooters are successful.
Hollenstein becomes the match winner. The 22-year-old kept his team in the game after being 1-0 down with strong saves until they equalized 95 seconds before the end, for which he made room for an outfield player. His best appearance so far in EVZ dress? “I can’t remember all of them, but it was definitely one of the better ones this season,” says Hollenstein, who prefers to be hit with shots right from the start and have to prove himself.
He actually relied on his intuition for his convincing performance in the shootout. Because Hollenstein says when asked about his preparation: “I didn’t know what to expect in the penalty shoot-out.” Or who. Although he knows the Gottéron players by name, he doesn’t know what half of the team looks like. “I wouldn’t recognize the foreigners,” he admits.
The goalkeeper’s recipe for success: “Just be patient and let the player do it.” Hollenstein prefers to rely on instinct when defending. And provides a logical explanation for it. If he had a specific penalty move or trick in mind, he would speculate on it and might not react correctly or too late.
