Although Nadine Fähndrich missed her top 10 goal at the Tour de Ski, which has just ended, her interim balance so far this winter can be extremely positive. The 27-year-old from Eigenthal quickly closed the gap in Swiss cross-country skiing after Dario Cologna retired. In her new role as leader and figurehead, she is more successful than ever in the World Cup.
Three sprint triumphs have already been recorded this season. After that in Beitostölen (No), she followed up with home victories in Davos and in Val Müstair. She is now the only woman record holder in Switzerland for individual World Cup victories (four in total).
Prize money from the previous season almost doubled
In addition, she has two other top 10 results and various rankings in the top 20. This is also reflected in the prize money. Fähndrich is in seventh place in the money ranking for the current season – with CHF 38,200. It’s already the most lucrative World Cup winter of her career. According to FIS 2020/21, it reached the previous high of CHF 31,700. In comparison, last season there were only 21,000 francs in total.
Unsurprisingly, Swede Frida Karlsson leads the prize money ranking for women. The Tour de Ski winner and overall World Cup runner-up is the best all-rounder to date. She raked in a whopping 146,100 francs. Behind there is a huge gap, the Norwegian Tiril Weng earns the second best, raking in 95,400 francs so far.
No comparison to the ski stars
Season dominator Johannes Hösflot Kläbo towers above all men. So far he has made it to 185,300 francs. That’s a lot of money, but compared to alpine skiing, for example, the cross-country premiums are clearly lagging behind. Marco Odermatt is the best man so far at 405,050 francs. As the most successful driver, Mikaela Shiffrin pocketed CHF 449,500. With Corinne Suter as the seventh best woman, it’s already 97,400 francs.
There are still plenty of opportunities for Fähndrich to further embellish their personal record season. The World Cup competitions last until the end of March. Until then, there are still seven individual sprints in which the Central Swiss is one of the favorites.
