FCB star Wouter Burger loves tattoos.
When Wouter Burger made his professional debut in the fall of 2018, he was only 17 and his body was still immaculate. tattoos? Were only approved in the Burger house from the age of majority. Since then, Burger’s development as a walking work of art has progressed as steeply as his footballing development into the heart of Basel’s midfield. And far from finished. The Dutchman takes Blick on a journey through his body.
Octopus with message in a bottle, right calf
“Like most of my tattoos, the motif doesn’t have any special meaning, I just like it. After the octopus was ready, I thought about a suitable addition — and came up with the message in a bottle.»
Cross, right thigh behind
“Faith plays a big role in my life. I pray before eating and before playing. I used to read the Bible, now I rarely do. The most important thing for me is to be a good person.”
Lion with baby, right thigh in front
«My first tattoo. Leo is neither my zodiac sign nor my nickname, I just like animals.”
Butterfly, right elbow
«Stands for: freedom above all!»
Feyenoord Rotterdam and Basel shirts, right upper arm in front
«I’ve also played for other clubs (Sparta and Excelsior Rotterdam) but only those associated with a significant career step get on the skin. Feyenoord is my home club where I turned pro. The move to Basel was the first step out of the comfort zone into a foreign environment.»
Secret code 222, right upper arm behind
«It is symbolic of the relationship with my girlfriend, she has the same tattoo in the same place. The code means: on the right path with the right person at the right time.»
Some motifs are to be added, some to be colored before the extremities on the left side of the body are added. An end? Is not in sight. If Burger has his way, that also applies to his sporting rise: At the beginning of the season he turned down a few requests from abroad because he only felt like he had really arrived a year after moving to Basel and wants to make the breakthrough to a top performer this season . He is well on the way to doing that. A newspaper wrote in autumn about the ups and downs of red and blue: “If Burger plays well, FCB plays well. And vice versa.”
In Holland they would have told him earlier that he was one for the Bundesliga. “That would be great. But I wouldn’t say no to the Premier League either, »says Burger and grins. If it comes to that at some point, it will almost certainly be linked to another tattoo.
