Kubilay Türkyilmaz tips the second half of the season exclusively for Blick.
«Champion will be … FC Basel. No, kidding aside. I’ve been wrong often enough with this prediction in the last two seasons. And now there’s not the slightest reason to dare it again. FCB was the big disappointment of the first half of the season. In the constellation with Alex Frei as coach, Martin Andermatt as mastermind, David Degen as president and his brother Philipp, who would be able to steer one or the other big player to Basel, I thought that something big could grow there. This mix seemed very interesting. Instead, it has become a withered little plant.
FCB’s figures are terrible
Normally, second place and thus qualification for the Champions League should be reserved for FCB. But when I see how unsolid Rotblau has performed so far, I even have doubts about this. 14 points behind YB. 21 goals in 16 games – that makes the legendary average of 1.3 per game. Terrible numbers!
That brings us to YB. Even if Basel gets stronger, YB will become a master with the left. The Bernese have by far the best squad. Mainly because they have a bench that is second to none in the Super League. They have conceded just nine goals in 16 games. Who is so stable, does not get into trouble. And if someone still wants to create excitement in the fight for the title, they would have to win all the games. Impossible!
In the battle for Europe, I see St. Gallen and Lugano in the end alongside FCB. The Eastern Swiss, because with their offensive style, which is aimed at three points in every match, they will achieve this goal again and again. Because the defenses of the SL clubs are not overly strong. And because such refreshing football should also be rewarded. And Lugano? That is the antithesis of St. Gallen. Stable, careful. And also careful off the field and concerned about continuity, which was just documented with the extension of coach Mattia Croci-Torti’s contract.
Sion is involved in the European race
I predict that Sion will still be involved in this European race. Because Fabio Celestini was successful practically everywhere in his first year and because the Valais have a very interesting squad. In the end it’s not quite enough. As well as not for the current Second Servette. While Lucerne tinkers around in midfield without any ambition, it could still get hot for GC.
At the Hoppers, Giorgio Contini does an excellent job under difficult circumstances. Which is why Zurich scored more points in the first half of the season than would be “normal”. This won’t happen again in the second half of the season and so they could fall back into the region with Winterthur and FCZ.
The FCZ, on the other hand, scored its points right from the start and will soon say goodbye to the barrage race. The men from Ancillo Canepa have far too much quality. Just as the winning streak in the 2020/21 championship season was surreal, so was the second half of 2022. Now normality is returning to the Letzigrund.
Champions in danger of relegation: “To be honest, I’m not nervous”(06:33)
Coach Berner has to go to the barrage with Winterthur
Which means: Winterthur goes to the Barrage. Coach Bruno Berner will not be dismissed even then. Even with a descent, that seems unlikely. In any case, there will hardly be any names in the trainer flight parade under which a cross can be made. Contini could be at risk if GC misses the second half of the season. Otherwise? No one! Except the FCB crashes further.
But what will rain are goals. As mentioned, the defenses are very weak. In many games, the fans will experience a huge spectacle. And the trainers age excessively quickly. So we can look forward to the second half of the Super League without reservation.”
