“There is a place available in the downhill team”

Roger Federer enjoys the winter.
Roger Federer (41) loves skiing. The retired tennis star has proven that several times. Unforgotten was his appearance last March in Lenzerheide GR: Federer attended the women’s Super-G and caused a storm of enthusiasm among drivers and fans. Everyone wanted to exchange a few words with him and pose for a photo together. “Everyone’s going crazy. Through the band, from nation A to nation Z, »Michelle Gisin (29) summarized the whole thing.

Federer himself was not on skis at the time. Not yet. Because now, a few months after his resignation, that has changed. On Instagram he posts a video showing him on the two slats. The maestro leaves it open whether he’ll ski down the slopes in Lenzerheide or enjoy the dreamy wintry weather somewhere else.
“It feels so good”
He writes about the video: “It’s been 15 years. It feels so good to be back on the slopes.” Add the hashtag new beginnings. “It’s like cycling,” comments ex-ski queen Lindsey Vonn (38), alluding to the fact that you don’t forget it.
Only: Why has Federer not been on skis for so long? He revealed that a few years ago. “I’ve always been someone who drives way too fast. That’s why I’ve been letting it be since 2008.”
But that’s not the only reason Federer gave up skiing. In 2017 he told Blick: “I’m really afraid that I’ll hurt myself. Even just putting on the heavy ski boots would be difficult. My knee is not used to this pressure.”
Second career as a skier?
The knee has since been operated on several times. Federer also decided to be able to ski with his children after his career. Now nothing stands in the way of having fun together on the slopes.
Or is he starting a second career? Beat Feuz (35), who competed in his last World Cup race on Saturday, says with a wink: “There is a place in the downhill team”. Federer hasn’t responded to this yet, but the Bern native has already received over 500 likes for his suggestion.
If that’s not enough to follow in Feuz’ footsteps, then at least there’s nothing standing in the way of a trip to the slopes together. The sports pensioners would have enough time for this. (bir)
