Beat Feuz says goodbye to skiing.
Feuz celebrates his first international success with a slalom bronze at the Junior World Championships in Bardonecchia. At the award ceremony, however, the down-to-earth farmer’s son from the Rosegg farm had a queasy feeling because of Czech gold medalist Filip Trejbal. “I was always a bit afraid of Trejbal because of his long hair, long beard and collar with studs. I never said a bad word around him.”
After winning downhill and super-G gold at the Junior World Championships in Flachau, the trained bricklayer was allowed to appear on the big ski stage for the first time at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide. With 14th place in the downhill, he immediately classified himself in the points. A few months later, however, the high-flyer suffered a painful setback in the form of a cruciate ligament tear.
Two weeks after Beat Feuz dropped out on the way to a medal at the World Championships in Garmisch, he celebrated his first World Cup victory on the downhill in Kvitfjell.
After a terrific winter with four victories (Wengen, Gröden, Sochi and Kvitfjell), the big shock follows in autumn – Feuz suffers a severe knee infection after a fish oil injection into the cartilage. After the infection could not be eliminated even after four knee rinses carried out under general anesthesia, the doctors seriously considered stiffening his knee. Only after the referral to the Inselspital in Bern to see Dr. Matthias Zumstein, the “knee of the nation” can be saved.
With second place in the Beaver Creek downhill, Feuz made it onto the podium for the first time since the drama surrounding his left knee. Two months later, the farmer’s son wins bronze in the downhill at the World Championships behind his teammate Patrick Küng and Travis Ganong.
Feuz tears his Achilles tendon during training in the fall. Four months later, however, he greeted him again from the podium in the Hahnenkamm downhill (rank 2). In March he triumphed in the downhill and super-G at the main rehearsal for the World Championships in St. Moritz.
The World Cup winter got off to a bad start. At the training camp in Colorado, Feuz was forced to take a break of several weeks due to paralysis of the right facial nerve. In February, however, one day after his 30th birthday, he gave himself the best present with gold in the downhill world championships.
After World Cup victories in Wengen, Lake Louise and Garmisch, Feuz won Olympic medals in South Korea for the first time (bronze in the downhill, silver in the super-G). At the end of this winter he secured the small ball for victory in the overall downhill World Cup for the first time.
Feuz triumphed for the first time on the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel. After bronze at the World Championships in Cortina, he grabs the downhill ball for the fourth time in a row.
Beat Feuz crowned his unique career with gold in the Olympic downhill in Beijing.
Farewell praise: “Feuz is the greatest downhill skier of all time”(05:34)
Denials after Olympic gold: That’s what Feuz said in February about the rumors of resignation(03:20)
