Gianni Infantino proposes that all 211 member countries of Fifa name a stadium after Pelé.
Fifa President Gianni Infantino expresses a curious idea that is probably difficult to implement: “We are asking all our member associations to name a stadium in the country after Pele.” World football’s governing body is asking all 211 member countries to pay tribute to the late football legend.
“The children, the coming generations around the world, need to know who Pelé was. And if in 30, 50, 100 years they score a goal in a stadium named after Pelé and ask who he was, we can say: He was the greatest and he moved us,” Infantino said at Pelé’s wake in the port city of Santos near São Paulo.

Infantino speaks of very large stadiums, not of sports fields with grandstands. However, the stadiums usually get their names after place names, local sizes or sponsors. To make matters worse, many associations, such as the Swiss Football Association, do not have their own stadium, but the stadiums are in the hands of cities or the clubs themselves. (SDA/che)
