Two big mistakes in the first run, followed by a flawless second run: Lara Gut-Behrami (31) improved from 13th to 5th place on Wednesday at Kronplatz. Unlike the day before, she can no longer keep up with ski high-flyer Mikaela Shiffrin (27). – The woman from Ticino ended up 1.38 seconds behind. She’s not worried about that.
In fact, Gut-Behrami is relieved that she was able to start at all. “This was only possible thanks to the work of my team,” she says on Swiss television. What Gut-Behrami addresses: Her knee caused problems after the speed races in Cortina. “Today I have no more pain, it’s just a bit swollen.”
Is Shiffrin now catching up with Stenmark?
After all: The World Cup calendar and the World Championship program in Méribel play Gut-Behrami in the cards. Why? First of all, there are still two slaloms in Spindlermühle (Tsch) next weekend – she doesn’t do this discipline. And secondly, the World Cup for Gut-Behrami does not start until February 8th, as she also omits the combination two days earlier. Means: She can fully recover before defending her title at the WM-Super-G. “That helps, of course. Now I have two weeks to regenerate.”
Shiffrin will not have this time, as she is contesting the slaloms at the weekend and the World Cup combination. It can already be said that she will be the favorite in all races. At Plan de Corones she clinched her 84th World Cup victory – on Sunday she could catch up with record holder Ingemar Stenmark (86 victories). “It’s theoretically possible. Let’s see if I can bring my energy to the slalom skis, »says Shiffrin.
