Stéphanie Frappart (38, France), Salima Mukansanga (33, Rwanda) and Yoshimi Yamashita (36, Japan) will be the first female referees at a men’s World Cup in Qatar. They were selected by the referee committee headed by Pierluigi Collina (62).

“This completes a long process that began a few years ago with the use of female referees at FIFA junior tournaments,” says the former top referee. “We are emphasizing that quality is the decisive criterion for us and not gender.” The goal is to make it normal for women to referee important men’s games in the future.
