Alexander Ritschard (28, ATP 204), Susan Bandecchi (23, WTA 150), Simona Waltert (21, WTA 198) and Joanne Züger (21, WTA 217) celebrate entering the second round of qualifying for the French Open. Ritschard and Waltert struggled the most, both losing the starting set, but then turning up the heat and winning in three sets.
Ylena In-Albon (23, WTA 119) is the only one in the Swiss team who does not survive the first round. The Valaisian is 108 places behind Japanese Yuriko Miyazaki (26), who has been playing for Great Britain since this year, 6: 3 and 6: 3. This means that a total of six out of nine Swiss are in the second round.
Mega series ripped by Feliciano Lopez
Next week’s French Open will be the first Grand Slam tournament in 20 years without Feliciano Lopez. Since the 2002 edition in Paris, the 40-year-old Spaniard had contested 79 consecutive major tournaments. After a defeat in the first round of qualifying, the record series of the left-hander, who fell back to 111th in the world rankings, is now over. (che/SDA)
