Several French skiers are slowed down by injuries.
Competing in a world championship in your own country is the dream of every athlete. All the more bitter when it bursts just before the start.
Two French skiers share this fate. A few weeks before the World Cup in Courchevel/Méribel (February 6th to 19th) they are confronted with devastating diagnoses.
Matthieu Bailet (26) fell badly in downhill training at the end of December. He only received the final diagnosis a few days ago: in addition to a concussion, a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament.
“I don’t want to hide the fact that this injury, the biggest of my career, is very difficult to cope with,” writes the up-and-coming speed driver on Instagram. “You have to digest that first.”
“Expected worse”
Victor Muffat-Jeandet (33) will also not be competing for the medals after his terrible fall last Saturday in the Adelboden giant slalom. Diagnosis: open fracture of the nose, hand wound, meniscus injury and tear of the external collateral ligament. Both have to be operated on, their season is over. “I had expected much worse, so that in the end it’s even positive,” says the technology specialist.
With these two, the sick bed of the French will be enriched by two names. And just before the big highlight of the season.
Adrien Fresquet (23) and Victor Schuller (28) fell like Bailet in Bormio and injured themselves. Fresquet tore his cruciate ligament and Schuller broke his wrist.
Fall shock also in women
Shortly after the start of the season it was clear that Thibaut Favrot (28) would miss the World Cup. The giant slalom crack sustained a serious knee injury during training.
The women who hosted the World Cup also had to deal with the shock of a fall at the weekend. Clarisse Brèche (21) got stuck at the last gate of the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora (Slo), was thrown through the air and landed hard on the slope. Now she has reported on Instagram. “Three fractures in the face and a planned operation, my heart is heavy,” she writes. She, too, will probably not contest any more races this season.
But one thing is for sure: Even if they can’t be there themselves, they will keep their fingers crossed for their fellow countrymen and women and celebrate any medals with them. (bir)
