Victor Muffat-Jeandet takes the audience’s breath away in Adelboden.
On Saturday, Victor Muffat-Jeandet (33) provided the shocking moment on the Chuenisbärgli. In the 2nd run of the giant slalom, the Frenchman hangs on a gate after a few seconds and falls terribly. He bangs his face hard on the runway and lands in the safety nets. The result is a minute-long interruption – just before the last six start.
When the race continues, Muffat-Jeandet is in the air and is flown to the hospital in Bern. Now he has spoken for the first time.
Operated in the middle of the night
He posts pictures on Instagram showing the consequences of the fall. He is lying in the hospital bed, his hand is heavily bandaged, as is his nose, his face covered in blood. With the thumbs up he signals that he is doing well under the circumstances.
“I was flown straight to the hospital in Bern because I was bleeding profusely and they were afraid of the shock,” Muffat-Jeandet writes. The wound on his hand was stitched up, and there are said to be no problems with the tendons or nerves. “The broken nose was open and they operated on me in the middle of the night,” he continues. After all: the rest of the head and back seems to be fine.
The Frenchman is more worried about his left knee, which “is not doing so well”. He is waiting to be transported back home to have it examined more closely.
Home World Cup in danger?
At the end of his posting, Muffat-Jeandet thanks him for the many messages he has received. “And above all thanks to the rescuers in Adelboden and all the teams in the hospital in Bern for taking such good care of me.”
If he injured his knee more severely, participation in a major event would probably be canceled twice within a year. In January 2022, he fell victim to the holey slope, which broke after the first riders, at the slalom in Zagreb. He fell and broke his ankle. The race ended prematurely after 19 athletes.
Small consolation for Muffat-Jeandet. He missed the Olympic Games in Beijing and was unable to defend the bronze medal he had won four years earlier in the combination. And now he is in danger of missing the home World Cup in Courchevel/Méribel (February 6th to 19th). (bir)
