Giro stars protest against Russian exclusion

What do Richard Carapaz (28, Equ), Vicenzo Nibali (37, It) and João Almeida (23, Por) have in common? Not much at first glance. Although they are among the stars of the current Giro d’Italia, they come from different countries and wear different team jerseys. However, there is something that unites them: in Italy they wear a blue rubber bracelet with the inscription “Why?” (German: Why?).

It’s a silent protest. Carapaz, Nibali, Almeida and many other cycling cracks do not agree with the decision of the world cycling association UCI to ban all athletes from Russian and Belarusian teams. This measure was taken in early March in response to the attack on Ukraine. In particular, Gazprom-RusVelo, a Russian second-division team, was hit hard by the exclusion.
