“I don’t understand it anymore”
Goal control confusion prevails at Kloten and ZSC
Kloten’s coach Jeff Tomlinson had question marks in his eyes after the derby defeat. And even at ZSC, you didn’t know exactly why the opening goal counted.

The ZSC Lions were the better team that night. But for the 3-1 victory in the derby they needed a goal to open the can just before the middle of the game, which was highly controversial.
What happened? ZSC striker Simon Bodenmann had deflected a shot from Lucas Wallmark to make it 1-0 for the city of Zurich, whereupon the Kloteners took their coaches challenge. The referees Thomas Urban (Austria) and Mikael Holm (Sd) watched the scene for what felt like an eternity. From all angles. What they saw: ZSC striker Denis Hollenstein had undoubtedly been in the (three-dimensional) goal area with his upper body.
Nevertheless, the referees validated the goal. “You said that Nicholas Steiner prevented the Zurich player from getting out of the goal area,” said Kloten coach Jeff Tomlinson. “I don’t understand the rule anymore. I really don’t understand.” Particularly bitter for the Zürcher Unterländer: ZSC used the penalty they received for the unsuccessful challenge with a curious head goal by Juho Lammikko to make it 2-0. And a little later, Bodenmann increased to 3:0.
“We let the referees do their job”
There was also uncertainty on the ZSC side. “I’m just trying to get in front of the goal. I don’t know exactly how the rules are interpreted. We let the referees do their job, »said Hollenstein. “We had no choice but to wait and see what they decide.”

Double goal scorer Bodenmann had also stared spellbound from the bench at the gigantic video cube on which the scene was shown again and again. “Because of the interpretation of the rules this year, I trembled. I think it’s a good goal for me. But this season we have already had some good goals disallowed. That’s why I wasn’t sure.”
The referees watched for a long time, said the 34-year-old striker who is looking for a job and who has already scored 12 goals this season. “I think Hollenstein tried everything to stay outside the goal area. And the defender pushed him in a little. But with the interpretation of the rules this year, it could also have been that they did not give the goal. »
In the first derby in the Swiss Life Arena, the Lions had already benefited from the interpretation of the rules in a coaches challenge when the Kloten equalizer was denied in the final phase after ZSC goalie Simon Hrubec had provoked contact with striker Arttu Ruotsalainen.
