Rosi Mittermaier never liked being the center of attention.
The sports world has been wearing black ribbons since last week. After a short, serious illness, the German ski icon Rosi Mittermaier († 72) died.
One of her last wishes was granted shortly before her death. She was allowed to leave the hospital at Christmas and spend the party with her family for the last time.
Now the farewell should take place as Mittermaier imagined. Even during her career, the two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion didn’t like being the center of attention. That’s why she wants to be buried with close family and friends.
Last rest at home
As reported by “Bild”, this wish is taken into account by her husband Christian Neureuther (73), the children Felix (38) and Ameli (41) and other relatives. There should be no public funeral service for Mittermaier. She is to be laid to rest in the cemetery in her home town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (De).
“She didn’t want any hustle and bustle,” says ex-skier Markus Wasmeier (59) to “Bild”. He was a close friend of Mittermaier. When the doctors told her shortly after the cancer diagnosis that there was no hope of a cure, she accepted. “Rosi was brave and positive, just like she always was,” said Wasmeier. “When she knew she couldn’t go on, she accepted it. She kept emphasizing how happy and fulfilled her life was.”
This is also because she knew that she didn’t have to worry about her family. “Christian is taken – and not alone,” reveals Wasmeier.
Silent greetings from Adelboden
His son Felix also made up his mind. He commented on the Garmisch Slalom last Wednesday and quit the job after the first run. He spoke for the first time over the weekend. On Instagram he addressed touching words to his mother with a photo from childhood: “You showed me the stars. Now you are one yourself.”
His former teammates also commemorate Rosi Mittermaier. For example, Linus Strasser (30) wears a black ribbon at the Adelboden slalom on Sunday and sends a silent greeting to heaven after the second run. (bir)
