He outshines everyone in Wengen: Aleksander Aamodt Kilde
Beat Feuz crashes down the Lauberhorn descent one last time – the retiring 35-year-old misses the podium, in the end it is 5th place. But the result degenerates into a minor matter: in the finish area, the three-time winner of this legendary race hugs his daughter. An emotional moment.
The votes to SRF
Beat Feuz (5.): «It was a cool day. I tried again to absorb everything, from the train ride to the inspection to the start. That really motivated me again, that I even had the second fastest start time. Thanks to the shortened start, I could already hear the fans at the finish line from above. These are emotions that will accompany me throughout my life. That motivated me to give it my all again. I really enjoyed driving here again. My daughter being here means everything to me. Receiving them at the finish is one of the best moments of my career. I experienced more on this slope than anywhere else. Three victories and so many podium places and that in front of the home crowd, where you feel like you know half of them personally. This is indescribable. If someone had told me at the beginning of my career that I would achieve so much, I would never have believed it. Finishing fifth in my last race on the Lauberhorn is a happy ending. Luckily, the best six are honored here, so I can witness the award ceremony again.”
Marco Odermatt (2nd): «After crossing the finish line, I didn’t expect a podium finish. Being so far behind with car number seven shows how hard Kilde rode and how difficult it is not to make mistakes at this track. I’m actually a strong starter, so it annoys me that I’ve already lost time there. I flew a bit too far at the Hundschopf, so unfortunately I didn’t land that well. Luckily I was able to catch myself and finish. In addition, the poor visibility made the journey very difficult. I think that Kilde and I are both very good downhillers, he just comes down a bit faster than me. He’s just a force this season and you have to acknowledge that.”
Second at the Lauberhorn: Odermatt with a moment of shock at Hundsschopf(01:05)
Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (1st): «It certainly suited me that we started the race from the shortened start. That suits me well because I usually lose time at the right start. Today I also did the Kernen-S really well. This is probably the only place in the World Cup where you have to stem turn. You never really know how to approach it. But today I made a good choice. It’s really cool to ski here. I thank all Swiss people for this support, it’s unbelievable. The last few days have been great.”
Niels Hintermann (7th): «I can’t blame myself much. I risked everything from the top and gave it my all. I’ve never had such a stupid line at the Minsch Kante, luckily it worked out. I hit the tunnel well twice in practice, but unfortunately I slipped a bit today. It was a very difficult ride, but I’m happy with my ride.”
Stefan Rogentine (13th): «Today we didn’t see much and the track was a bit more restless. Despite the shortened start, the race was very tough, as always in Wengen. After yesterday’s race, I was still happy that we didn’t have to drive the full length. Even though today’s Super-G podium wasn’t quite enough, I’m satisfied with my performance. It was a successful weekend.” (mab)
