Done! Mikaela Shiffrin catches up with Lindsey Vonn and now also has 82 World Cup victories under his belt.

Mikaela Shiffrin (27) in training clothes, large on the cover of “Outside Magazine”. The text: “She is the greatest ski racer of all time.” It’s been five years since the US magazine caused a tantrum in Lindsey Vonn (38) with this presentation. “She’s the best slalom driver – without question,” admitted Vonn. The rest? Could you imagine. Two years later, Vonn shot concrete poison darts. “She was doing her own thing and she never really wanted to be involved or my help or anyone’s help.” Shiffrin did not offer her help to anyone either – Vonn was upset: “I think as a professional athlete – and especially as the ‘best of all time’ – you have a responsibility to help others.”
A lot has happened since then. Above all, this: Shiffrin continued to win. Not always and with interruptions, especially the death of her father Jeff (1955-2020) threw her off track in the meantime. “Resignation was an issue at the time,” Shiffrin recently admitted. But the ski prodigy from Vail (USA) continued. And how! That season she won 7 of the 14 races she started. At the second giant slalom in Kranjska Gora (Sln) victory number 8 is added. Shiffrin has 82 World Cup victories to his credit, just as many as Vonn. “Maybe people will stop asking me about it now,” she says, laughing. “I try not to think about it. I try not to change my goals because of that. But yes, it’s 82 wins. It’s indescribable.”
“Got a rash on my face”
Will Shiffrin actually be spared questions about records in the future? Barely. Already on Tuesday at the night slalom in Flachau (Austria) she could leave Vonn behind with another triumph, then she would still need three successes to catch up with record holder Ingemar Stenmark (86 victories). The legendary Swede has no doubts that the super technician will make it. “She will get more than 100 wins,” he said last year.
But the fact is: Until Shiffrin overtakes Stenmark, she will probably have to survive a few more tense moments. Just like in Kranjska Gora. “I was so nervous that I got a rash on my face,” she says in the finish area. Perhaps this was because of the record mark. She describes her situation before the start of the second run, which she tackled as the leader: “My heart is pumping and I can’t feel my legs. Whenever I feel that, I try to be even stronger, to push myself even more to the limit instead of being too nice.”
Vonn needed 395 races for her 82 wins, Shiffrin made it in 233 races. At 27, the girlfriend of Norway’s super moose Aleksander Kilde (30) still has many years ahead of her – if she wants to. In any case, Vonn spoke very favorably about her former competitor before Christmas. “In my opinion, she is the best skier who has ever lived,” she told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
Gut-Behrami praises Shiffrin
In all the hustle and bustle around Shiffrin, it is almost forgotten that a Swiss woman shines that day in Kranjska Gora: Lara Gut-Behrami (31). The Ticino is still not completely satisfied with her position over the skis, but she skis well and from 5th place at half-time to 3rd place. “The balance at the gates isn’t quite right yet, but I’m fast. That’s positive,” she says. And to Shiffrin? She says: “It’s great, sport lives on stories like that.”
