“I cried like a castle dog”
Beat Feuz resigns. How much will that affect him? Impossible to predict. But Marco Büchel suspects how it could be.

Beat Feuz is about to resign. Marco Büchel tells how intense the emotions can be afterwards. Here the two are on stage after Feuz’ victory at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz with Max Franz (left) and Eric Guay (right).

How bad will it be for Beat Feuz? The Emmental downhill king ended his career in Kitzbühel. Watching races on TV afterwards could become a painful experience.
At least if you take Marco Büchel as a benchmark. The Liechtensteiner retired in 2010 with World Championship silver and four World Cup victories in palmarès. And describes on TV what happened to him afterwards.
“I almost slapped myself watching the descent on TV.”Marco Büchel, former ski racer
Büchel is still convinced today that it was the right decision. That’s what he says in the “Sport and Talk in Hangar 7” program on Servus TV, when the topic came up about the retired Olympic champion Matthias Mayer (Austria).
The big but: “I almost slapped myself when I watched the descent in Lake Louise on TV a few months later.”
The pictures hit Büchel hard. The melancholy grips him. “I cried like a lock dog,” admits the 51-year-old.
Feuz and the great emotions on the Lauberhorn
Whether Feuz is similar in the end? Even before the Lauberhorn, there was little sign of melancholy in him. “It doesn’t feel any different. I’m happy to be back in Wengen and then in Kitzbühel. It’s also good that the chapter is over after that.”
But after the Wengen descent, it sounded different from the 35-year-old. «Thanks to the shortened start, I could already hear the fans at the finish line from above. These are emotions that will accompany me throughout my life,” Feuz told SRF. “Having my daughter here means everything to me. Receiving them at the finish line is one of the best moments of my career.”
