As a footballer, you were an absolute top player. Thorsten Fink was with Bayern in the Champions League final, Alex Frei is Switzerland’s record goalscorer. But that doesn’t mean that as a former professional you’re automatically a good coach, emphasizes Fink. “As an ex-player you have to work hard and under no circumstances should you think that you already know everything. You have to be open to new things, constantly educate yourself.»

Thorsten Fink was on the sidelines for 120 games between 2009 and 2011 at FC Basel. Did he already know then that his protégé would one day become a coach? “No, I wouldn’t have thought that,” says Fink. Also because Frei didn’t have to worry too much about tactics on the pitch back then. “If he wanted to come from the storm into midfield and reward himself, then he lost tactically. I always told him to stand in front. Because Alex was the one who threw the balls in,” says Fink with a smile.
