First failure, then rank 6: Gisin pours out her heart
“I had driven myself into misery”
Michelle Gisin (29) is experiencing ups and downs this winter. She explains what she attributes this to – and is very self-critical.

Michelle Gisin has had a tough winter so far, but returns to the top 10 in St. Anton.

In addition to Lara Gut-Behrami, there is a second Swiss woman who is beaming after the Super-G: Michelle Gisin (29). With 6th place, she achieved her second-best result of the winter – again in the Super-G. “The result is good, but more important is the performance. After the retirement on Saturday, I wanted to step on the gas right at the start to activate my body properly.” It succeeds, none of the 52 starters is faster than Gisin after 18 seconds.
She is strong after that too and is on the way to victory in the last split. But then what she describes as follows happens: “I missed a corner and was almost out of it. A full stop. But I couldn’t allow another failure.” Sixth place at the finish ultimately tastes bittersweet.

Tight instead of loose
With some distance, Gisin will be happier. Because: your winter is complicated to say the least. After changing equipment from Rossignol to Salomon, the two-time combined Olympic champion never found her step. Although she made it into the top 15 in 21 races in every discipline, she only made it into the top 10 three times. “I can’t claim to drive around where I’ve often driven around before,” says Gisin before the weekend to look.
She emphasizes that the setup problems were now part of the truth. “The problem was that I had too high expectations at the beginning.” A lot was right – but it didn’t stay that way. “After that, step by step, I drove myself into misery.” It was only in Flachau, after the second slalom run (Gisin went from 26th to 14th place), that she noticed: “Not everything that I felt before the season went away at once. Several problems were due to my cramping.”
The other Swiss women cannot convince in St. Anton – or at least not completely. Corinne Suter is tenth – she had hoped for much more. After all: Jasmine Flury (11th) and Priska Nufer (14th) manage to take a step forward compared to the day before.
