Sprinter Del Ponte and climber Favre swap sports

“I was a little scared”

World-class sprinter Ajla Del Ponte tries bouldering, top climber Nils Favre runs the 100 meters. Who is doing better on new terrain when swapping sports?

No hurdles, no obstacles: the 100-meter straight in an athletics stadium is of course flat and designed so that the sprinters can cover it as quickly as possible. The best in the world make it just under 11 seconds. Just like Ajla Del Ponte (25) last year with her sensational Swiss record (10.90), which Mujinga Kambundji recently broke.

Sprinter boulders in the Maggia Valley

But this time there is an obstacle in the way of the Ticino. A big rock in the Maggia Valley, near her birthplace Locarno TI. Perfect for bouldering, but not perfect for a sprinter who rarely has to hold onto anything with her fingers. “You see the handles and you say it’s easy.” But if you then need all your strength in the rock face, you can see that it is really difficult.

The elite climber Nils Favre (30), who instructs Del Ponte (“Put your foot on something safe”), offers support in the sport swap. Does the sprinter really cheer on the rock at the end? The answer can be seen in the video.

Climber sprints the 100 meters

Climber Favre also ventures into new terrain, just flat and apparently easy. The European Cup runner-up competes against Olympic finalist Del Ponte over 100 meters. What is extremely important in this high-speed sport: a good warm-up. Otherwise, it twitches quickly in the adductors. But Favre already senses the stretching: “She wants to make me tired so that I can’t run fast afterwards.”

Of course, the climber does not beat the fast Swiss in the sprint duel, that much can be revealed. After all, a time under 11 seconds is also excellent for a man. His words at the finish are: “It took so long.” Even the relatively short 100 meters is already a steep distance. But his conclusion: “It was nice to discover a new sport with Ajla.”
